- Suda alumni in Milwaukee, Wisconsin had a small gathering during Thanksgiving weekend. Attended were Zhao Yuanxi, Zhang Han, Wu Jianrong, Qin Yanping and Li Kai. The event was organized by Zhang Han. (Qin Yanping)
- We visited Dr. Cheng Yufei's family in Madison, Wisconsin during Thanksgiving weekend. Cheng Yufei (Chemistry, 77) and his wife Xu Hui (Chemistry, 77) moved from England to Madison, WI, two years ago. Xu Hui is very active in the Chinese community in University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is teaching Chinese for kids and adults. She is also the president of a Dancing Club. (Qin Yanping)
随着苏州大学理学院的成立，原数学科学学院，物理科学与技术学院和化学化工 学院分别改成理学院数学系，物理系和化学化工系。目前苏州大学拥有以下十九 个院系： 文学院，工学院，社会学院，政治与公共管理学院， 财经学院，法学院，外国语 学院，理学院数学系，理学院物理系，理学院化学化工系，文正学院，体育学院， 材料工程学院，艺术学院，蚕桑学院，水产学院，教育学院， 职业技术学院和国 际合作交流学院。
1992年苏州大学与香港爱国实业家周忠继先生合作建立了纵横汉字信息技术研究所。汉 字信息处理也称为中文信息处理，它是以中国语言文字为处理对象，以计算机为处理工 具，研究中国语言文字信息更好，更快的在计算机上得到处理的新兴边缘学科。它也是 世界范围内，信息领域的一个重要而庞大的分支。研究所采用了世界上一流的计算机设备和世界上最先进的网络技术。构造了纵横汉字信 息技术研究所内部网，同时也成为校联网的一个结点，最大程度，最快速度享Internet的 资源。研究所内，骨干的平均年龄为30岁左右。在学科带头人钱培德教授的带领下，锻 炼和培养了这支年轻化，知识化的专业队伍。
在十几年的发展中，本学科逐步探索出了一条得到国内外同行公认的中文信息处理技术 的道路。在基础研究和项目开发方向上取得了突出的成绩。本学科在注重基础研究的同 时还十分注意把理论成果运用到实际应用中去。在近十几年中，有许多项目完成并通过 了国家级技术鉴定，省部级技术鉴定项目，以及国家重点实验室项目。并向海内外转让 了部份科研成果。
把研究和科技成果推向社会，使其产生良好的社会效益和经济效益是我们研究所的一大 特色，突出为地方经济服务是我们一贯的宗旨。这一方面为经济建设作出了贡献，另一 方面也锻炼了我们的科研队伍，逐步形成了一个学以致用，善打硬仗的科研群体。在地 方上享有较高的知名度。

- 1999年11月30日，研究所接到通知，由研究所开发的纵横Windows套 件获98年度江苏省科技进步三等奖、苏州市科技进步二等奖；由研究 所开发的PAL个人信息管理系统获江苏省优秀软件三等奖。
- 1999年11月29日，学校聘任吕强副教授为研究所副所长。
- 1999年11月15日，研究所两位老师朱巧明和杨季文专程到南通中等专 科学校调研该校和南通市其他学校纵横码教学培训情况。
- 1999年11月12日在南京召开的“江苏省高校科技与产业工作会议” 上，苏州大学纵横汉字信息技术研究所被省教委评为“九五”期间高 校科技和产业工作先进集体。
- 1999年11月8日，由研究所和苏州市交通警察支队共同举办的交警计 算机应用培训拉开序幕。今晚，苏州市交通警察支队的40名干警在苏 州大学纵横培训中心开始接受计算机应用知识培训。上课前市交警支 队白政委作了简短的讲话，要求干警认真参加培训，对苏州大学和纵 横汉字信息技术研究所表示感谢。交警计算机应用培训将分分期分批 进行，每期培训时间为58课时。首期乙班将在明晚开始。
- 1999年11月5日，中国科学院计算机技术研究所所长、国家八六三计 划智能计算机主题首席专家高文博士等一行在副校长朱秀林的陪同下 到研究所考察。专家组一行听取了研究所对承担的863重点项目"个人 信息管理系统"开发工作的汇报，并观看了软件演示。专家组对"个人 信息管理系统"项目开发工作表示满意，同时提出了进一步的要求和建 议。专家组对纵横汉字编码法也表现出浓厚的兴趣。
- 1999年10月22至24日，江苏省教委在南通师范学校成功地举办了"第 三次纵横码汉字输入大奖赛"，来自全省各地的50多个代表队参加了比 赛，上海、浙江、山东组织了表演队参加比赛。在这次大奖赛中，选 手达到了随机文本五分钟录入999字的好成绩。

秋萍 作者： 渔夫 靠着广大知青干群的冲天干劲，俺们农场革命生产双丰收，年底插红旗应是十拿九稳。 可是一到评比的关键时刻，总有一两个女知青的肚皮会莫名其妙地大起来。煮熟的鸭子 连飞了三年，这捉奸的事儿就慢慢提到了党委的议事日程上来。
下雪了。俺们几个无家可归的单干户围着火炉拱猪，喝酒，嗑花生。忽接探子来报，鬼 子进村了，脚印直奔秋萍的小屋。孙指导（有机会再聊他的事）一听就来神了，绿豆眼 瞪得有黄豆大，今天要开荤。
俺打小眼神不济，被窝里看书落下的毛病，手脚又不利索，这种伟大光荣的任务平时轮 不到俺。可今天情急人缺，孙指导呲着牙花儿考虑了半天，说：“你啥事别干，就给照 个亮吧。”递给俺一个四节电池的大电棒子，大夥深一脚浅一脚地出发了。
说起这个秋萍，可有一段故事。听说她是锦州军区某司令员的独养千金，不知怎么地偷 偷爱上了她爹的警卫员。东窗事发后，她老爹二话没说就打发这小伙子退伍回了老家。 秋萍也够硬气，自个儿买了张车票，一脚跟到了俺们那穷窝窝。平时不大跟人说话，棉 猴下只露两大眼睛扑扇扑扇。想来是年关县里小煤窑放假，她的那个偷偷来看她咧。
按照党委工作会议的即定方针，一个守后窗，两个堵前门，孙指导扒着门缝听声音。时 机一到，大脚踹开房门，大呼“捉奸”。俺双手高举电棒，一路跌跌撞撞紧跟而进。昏 暗模糊中，拳头，鞋底，肉，汗，唾沫，青肿，血。。。唯一清晰的是那高一声低一声 痛苦的求饶声：“叔伯老少爷儿们，饶了俺吧。俺不懂事，要打就打，消消气。别伤秋 萍，全是俺的错。”“那有那么便宜，”孙指导大声呵斥：“绑起来送派出所。”大家 伙忙着解裤带，找绳子。乱哄哄中只听一声凄历的尖叫，秋萍从那一直哆嗦的一团被子 下冲了出来：“不能抓俺男人。要抓，俺就死给你看。”昏黄的电棒光柱下，只见一片 雪白。那是一种充满活力的雪白，柔软，光洁，冰冷，是俺们乡下姑娘泡三天热水池， 打五遍香胰子也洗不出来的那种雪白。大夥全愣住了，谁也没有想到有这一出。孙指导 咋呼了几声，见没人答腔，也闷了炮了。
大夥狼狈地逃了出来，踏着厚厚的积雪，谁也没有出声。一片雪白，一片雪白。。。在 那静寂圣洁的雪夜，悄悄地，从俺心底涌出一个要配付眼镜的愿望。 Qiuping Translator： Tian Xin Busting our guts all year round, we achieved double harvest in revolutionary zeal and production, it seemed certain that the Red Flag would be planted in our farm end of the year. However, when the crucial time for evaluation came, there would always be one or two girls with bellies pumped up for some unknown reason. The prize bird thus flew away for three bloody years in succession. Therefore the task of catching the sinful culprits had slowly crept up on the agenda of the Party Committee. Snow fell. A handful of us homeless single guys sat around the fire, playing cards, drinking, and cracking peanuts. Suddenly the spy rushed in with the news, "The Japs have come to the village. Footsteps lead directly to Qiuping's hut." Instructor Sun was immediately activated, his mung bean eyes popped out soy bean size: haha, today is the day to end a meatless diet! Alas for me! I had had poor vision since a kid, a legacy from reading (forbidden?:-) books under the blanket, and my limbs were clumsy. Naturally I was never favored with such honorable and glorious missions. And today, due to the urgency of the matter and lack of human resources, it took Instructor Sun quite some time gritting his teeth before he finally decided, "You don't need to do anything. Just hold the torch," and handed me a huge thing loaded with four batteries. Off we tramped. Talking of this Qiuping, there was a story. It was said that she was the only daughter of a certain general from Jinzhou Military Area, but foolishly fell for her dad’s bodyguard. When the secret was found out, her old dad without further ado sent the chap back home. This Qiuping was apparently rather headstrong herself, she caught a train and followed her love to our dirt poor region. She didn't talk to people much, only two huge eyes opening and closing beneath her hood. Probably the little mine where her guy worked was closed for the spring festival, and he of course crept clandestinely to visit his sweetheart. Sticking strictly to the established policy of the Party Committee, we hit on a strategic attack, one guarding the rear window, two blocking the door, Instructor Sun ear pressed against the door crack for significant sounds. As soon as the time was ripe, he kicked open the door with his big boots, calling at the top of his voice, "Seize the adulterer!" Holding the torch high with both hands, I stumbled in his wake. In darkness and confusion: fists, shoe soles, flesh, sweat, spit, black and blue bruises and blood…. One thing only was distinct, an aching voice begging high and low, "Please please uncles and brothers, spare me. I am a nutcase, beat me if you like, to cool your anger. Please don't hurt Qiuping. It's all my fault." "No way! Don't you dream of such a cheap deal!" shouted Instructor Sun, all indignation. "Bind the fellow and send him to the police!" It was followed by the sound of unwinding of belts for rope. In the midst of helter skelter, a shrill shriek burst out. Qiuping leapt out from under the quivering quilt, "Don't you take my man! Do it, and I'll show you how I die!" Under the pale yellow dim torchlight, there burst forth a splash of snowwhite. A snowwhite of vitality, a snowwhite of softness, of sleekness, of iciness, a whiteness that our country lasses couldn't possibly attain, even after three days hot bath plus five soapy polishes. All were stunned, none had expected this scene. Instructor Sun blustered a few syllables, but seeing no response from the others, went dumb himself. Fleeing in a sorry state over the thick snow, nobody uttered one single sound. A splash of snowwhite, a splash of snowwhite....
