Dear fellow alumni: Our very first issue of SUNAAA newsletter is now ready for you to read. You may find it not rich in resources. It's true. Hope our next issue will be just as good as you expected. We want to publish this newsletter bimonthly, this means that we definately need your contribution. Reports on anything related to our alumni will be accepted here. If you are going to organize a local chapter and have some activities, here is a perfect place to announce. If you have good news to share with our fellow alumni, send it here; If you are going to graduate, let us know and our alumni will congratulate you. If you get a new job, promoted to a higher position, send the news here so we can share your happiness. If you get married, get a new born baby, sent the news, even with pictures, here and we would like to let every alumni know. If you know something happened in our Alma Mater, also please let us know. If you are an artist, we can publish your masterpiece here. The same is true for writer, if you have new works, why do not you let our fellow alumni to read it first. Healthy joke, humor are always welcome. You contribution can be in either English or Chinese, or both. Electronic form will be easy for us to publish, but hard copy is also acceptable. Making contribution is eay, just send it to me, likai@hawaii.edu, for the time being. Plaese use "contribution to SUNAAA" as your e-mail subject. Comments and suggestions are welcome. - Soochow University North American Alumni Association (SUNAAA)will be formally established and ceremony will be held in Dallas, TX, on Nov. 7-8, 1998. Our fellow alumni are welcome to attend.

A Letter to Alumni of Soochow University in North America Dear Soochow University Alumni: Hello! Some of you have graduated earlier, and gone abroad and have been working hard over the past several decades. More of you have traveled over the Pacific Ocean to North America to study and work since China was opened in 1979. By now you have achieved success in your careers. Your Alma Mater is proud of you, and your former colleagues and friends are proud of you , too. As you know, the history of Soochow University could be traced back to 1900, when this University was established. Ever since then, it has been educating hundreds and thousands of students who are now qualified people in their own areas of expertise. Our alumni are all over the world. For the sake of exchange of information and connection, Soochow University is going to set up alumni associations in various places throughout the world. North America is where our alumni are most concentrated, so Soochow University plans to have Soochow University North America Alumni Association (SUNAAA) established. I have already dispetched Prof. Wang Guoping, Dean of School of Sociology to travel to the USA and help with the preparation of this establishiment. Some leaders of Soochow University will visit the USA in person by the end of October, or early November to attend the opening ceremonies. Announcement of Conference about the Establishment of Soochow University North America Alumni Association (SUNAAA) Dear Alumni: You may have read the letter from Mr. Peide Chian, the president of Soochow University. On behalf of Mr. Chian, Mr. Guoping Wang, professor and dean of the college of Sociology in Soochow University, has been to America for assisting the establishment of the Association. Based on the discussion with some members of original Suzhou University Overseas Alumni Association (SUOAA) preparative committee and with the permission of the University , some arrangements concerned are announced as follows: 1. The preparative committee of SUNAAA consists of North America members of original SUOAA preparative committee (Xing Cheng, YongZhang Leng, Kai Li, Fuming Tao, Zhengming Wang, Shuliang Zhang, Jun Zhu) along with Yuan Gong and Mr. Guoping Wang. It will take care of the preparation of the conference. 2. With some reasons, we can not have all of the members here to attend the conference and it is also difficult to have the representative meeting. Therefore, the Board of Directors (Li Shi Hui) will be voted via e-mail before the conference time (07/11-08/11). 3. The first session of Board of Directors will be consisted of 20 members, which are about 10% of the alumni in North America. The candidates are made of original SUOAA members, which are 7 and another 13 nominees. The list of nominees will be proposed by the preparative committee. 4. The votes (send & return) will be mailed or via e-mail. The results will be announced at appropriate time and also during the conference. 5. The votes will be mailed at 09/25 and expect to return until 10/10. The first session meeting of the Board of Directors will be held during the conference, and the President, vice-president, general administrator will be selected at that time. The conference will also discuss and review the rules of Association. 7. The president, Mr. Peide Chian will come to attend the conference and visit the alumni in North America. 8. The conference will be held in Dallas, TX. All of the alumni are welcomed to attend! (There are some funds available around $5,000 to support those alumni who need help with the trip.) 9. The conference budget is about $12,000 which will be raised by the preparation committee. No membership fee. 10. All the other arrangements will be discussed and announced later. Soochow University North America Alumni Association Bylaw CHAPTER 1 General Rule 1.1. The name of this organization is Soochow University North America Alumni Association (SUNAAA),hereinafter referred to as the Association. 1.2. The Association is an independent and non-profit organization. CHAPTER 2 Mission & activities 2.1. Mission Our mission is to serve the members of the Association by strengthening the ties between the members of the Association and that between the Association and our Alma Mater, Soochow University. The Association will act as a bridge between the members of the Association, and that between our Alma Mater and the members of the Association. 2.2. Activity In order to achieve the mission mentioned above, the following activities are provided. 2.2.1 editing and distributing membership directory and newsletters 2.2.2 facilitating the information exchange and communication among the members. 2.2.3 In addition, other activities relevant to this mission. CHAPTER 3 Membership 3.1. Qualification Those who apply for membership and accept the by-laws and who are applicable to the following items are qualified to be a member. 3.1.1 Graduates from Suzhou University 3.1.2 Employees and former employees of Suzhou University 3.3.3 Those related to Suzhou University whose admission was approved by the board 3.2. Membership There are three classes of membership in the Association. 3.2.1 General membership 3.2.1.1 Normal membership Those who are not students presently 3.2.1.2 Student membership Those who are students presently 3.2.2 Honor membership 3.2.2.1 Those who have special achievements and who are nominated by the board member and approved by the board of directors. 3.2.2.2 Those who have been a member over 40 years 3.2.3 Membership dues General members shall pay membership dues which are recommended by the board of directors. 3.3. Loss of qualification Those who wish to withdraw from the Association lose their membership. CHAPTER 4 Board of Directors The administration of the Association is vested in the Board of Directors when the general membership meeting is not in session. 4.1. Directors The Association has the following officers: one President, one Vice-President,one secretary and such other officers as the Board of Directors may establish. 4.2. Election The directors are elected via the following procedures. 4.2.1 The President, Vice-President, and secretary are elected from the board of directors 4.2.2 The directors are elected from general meeting. 4.3. Duty 4.3.1 The President represents the Association and is responsible for its operation. The President appoints all other officers such as treasurer except the Vice-President and Secretary and call for Board meeting. 4.3.2 The Vice-President assists the President in transaction of the Association's operation. In the absence of the President, the Vice-President performs the duties of that office. 4.3.3 The treasurer receives and has the custody of the funds of the Association and transacts them under the direction of the President and/or the Board. The treasurer prepare written financial reports to the Board periodically or upon request. 4.4. Term The officers are elected for a two-year term and shall not serve more than two consecutive terms. The Board members are elected for a two-year term and may serve more than one term. CHAPTER 5 Meeting 5.1 Board meeting The Board meeting is composed of all the directors and discusses the activities, budget, settlement of accounts, board members and other relevant affairs. 5.1.1 The President is in charge of the board as Chairperson. 5.1.2 In general, the board meeting is held annually. 5.2. Special Board meeting can also be held at the request of the President or one-half of the Board members. The subjects discussed in the board meeting must be reported to them through the newsletter. 5.3. General meeting The general meeting, in general, is held every two years at a date recommended by the Board. CHAPTER 6 Property & Account 6.1. Property The Property of the Association is composed of the membership fee, donations and their interest. 6.2. Fiscal year The Fiscal year of the Association is to begin in Sept 1st and to end in Aug. 31th. CHAPTER 7 By-laws revision The by-laws revision must be decided by the board meeting and approved by the general meeting if needed to be revised. Supplementary 1. Soochow University with a long history,is one of the comprehensive institutions of higher learning directly under the Jiangsu Provincial Government. It was built upon Soochow University founded in 1900. It is one of the 100 key construction universities of China listed in the “ 211 Project" . It has such programs as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, public administration and so on. Soochow University occupies an area of 89 hectares with a floor space of 480,000 square meters. It has a library with a collection of more than 2,100,000 volumes of books and of more than 4,000 kinds of China and foreign journals. Soochow University has more than 24,000 students, including over 15,000 undergraduates, more than 500 postgraduates and about 8,500 adult education students. It has 3,200 faculty and staff members, including more than 700 professors and associate professors. It has 18 schools, namely: School of Chinese Language and Literature, School of Social Studies, School of Political Science and Public Administration, School of Finance and Economics, School of Law, School of Foreign Languages and Literature, School of Mathematical Science, School of Physical Science and Technology, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Engineering, School of Silk Technology, School of Arts, School of Sericulture, School of Aquatic Product, School of Physical Education, School of Professional Technology, School of Adult Education, and School of International Studies. There are 52 graduate programs, 10 doctoral programs, and one post-doctoral program in Soochow University. Of these programs, 16 have been appraisedas key programs of Jiangsu Province. Inaddition, 4 key laboratories of the Province and 2 national training bases for personnel in liberal arts and natural sciences have been set up in recent years. It has established ties with over 60 universities in Japan, Korea, Singapore, the US, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan by way of exchanging students and teachers. 东吴苏州名虽殊途 揭橥校徽实属同归 共看校训应相贺 一处校徽两岸同 【东吴校刊讯】本校刘校长春假期间,专程前往苏州大学访问,并与该校钱校长进 一步磋商,对两校明年共同庆祝建校百年活动,已初步达成许多具体协议。 刘校长访问苏州大学返校后,谈及此次前往苏州的心得甚多,其中最令人感动的是,该校 钱校长特别展示苏州大学的校徽与校训。原本苏州大学平日并无专设校徽,今年元月 钱校长来本校访问后,对本校在外双溪校区中,特设校徽墙揭橥校徽一事印象深刻。并对 校徽中「养天地正气,法古今完人」的校训,尤其感触良多。 钱校长回到苏州后,立刻积极推动校徽校训之设置,并得到该校教委书记的大力支持,矗 立在苏州校园,原已尘封多年的校徽校训,自此才得以重见天日。 尤其值得一提的是,苏州大学大门两侧的牌楼,铭刻的是国父孙中山先生的墨宝「养天地 正气,法古今完人」,与本校外双溪校区的牌楼几乎一模一样。 苏州大学校门牌楼上的校训,在文革期间曾遭红卫兵以水泥泥封,此次得以重见天日,可见 与本校渊源之深与情谊之厚。校长这次专访苏州大学时,与该校钱校长暨四位副校长,特地 选在该校校门前合影留念,见证两校相同的校训与深厚的情谊,并相约明年共同庆祝建校百 年活动。 Source: http://www.scu.edu.tw/scu/161-1.htm Back to TOC
本校于清光绪二十六年(1900)由基督教监理会〈卫理公会之前身〉创办,以 苏州博习书院、宫巷书院及上海中西书院等三校先后合并而成,并假天赐庄 博习书院原址为校址,设文、理二科,于次年三月正式开学。初名中央大学, 稍后以苏州于古代别称「东吴」,因易今名。另取「苏州」之英语拼音定英 文校名为『Soochow University』。 民国四年,制宪运动风起云涌,朝野一致提倡法治,本校遂于上海昆山路中 西书院原址设立法科,首创案例教学法及模拟法庭(moot court),为我国法 学教育奠立坚实之始基。 民国六年,理科研究所颁授我国第一位化学硕士学位;民国八年,颁授我国 第一位生物学硕士学位。 民国九年,与基督教青年会全国协会合作,于苏州本校附设体育专修科,培 植体育专才。 民国十六年,文、理、法科更名为文学院、理学院及法学院。 民国十八年八月,本校奉国民政府教育部核准立案,仍维持文、理、法三学 院,并开始兼收女生。 民国二十六年,抗战军兴,全校师生移至上海公共租界慕尔堂上课。太平洋 战事爆发,日军进踞上海租界,法学院改以「中国比较法学院」之名,移至上 海南阳路继续上课,旋西迁重庆。文、理学院师生则辗转迁徙于浙江、安徽、 四川、广东诸地,历尽艰辛,而弦歌未辍。 民国三十四年,抗战胜利,法学院乃于次年春回沪,并恢复原名。同时文、 理两学院亦在苏州复课。 民国三十八年,本校不及迁离,创校半世纪之校史,不幸中辍,至可慨也。 民国四十年,本校旅台同学会,鉴于本省大专院校过少,失学青年日增,倡 议在台复校。因格于法令,乃先设东吴补习学校,组成董事会,并聘丘汉平博 士任校长,暂借台北市汉口街一段十五号为校舍,于是年十一月隍7d学。 民国四十一年,董事会改组,共推王宠惠博士为董事长,陈霆锐博士为副董 事长。旋因丘校长辞职,改聘施季言先生为校长。 民国四十三年七月,教育部以东吴补习学校办学绩效卓著,核准东吴大学复 校,并令先行恢复法学院,准设法律、政治、经济、会计四学系,附设外国语 文学系。董事会聘请陈霆锐博士出任院长。并与卫理公会恢复固有关系。 民国四十四年六月,陈霆锐院长辞职,董事会推江一平、富纲侯、施季言三 先生组成院务委员会管理院务。九月,聘请曹文彦博士继任院长。 民国四十五年夏,奉准增设中国文学系。同时在士林外双溪觅置土地十五甲 为校址,兴建校舍。 民国四十六年六月,曹院长奉派出国,董事会聘石超庸博士继任院长。 民国四十七年三月,董事长王宠惠博士逝世,改由黄仁霖博士继任董事长。 九月,外双溪新校址之教学大楼建筑完成,命名为宠惠堂。部份学系迁入新校 园上课。 民国四十八年夏,学生活动中心双层大厦落成,上层暂用为礼堂及图书馆, 可容千人;下层用为餐厅,可供四百余人进餐。另男、女生宿舍及院长、教授 、员工住宅等亦相继兴工,并于民国五十年全部完成。 民国五十年秋,全校由台北市汉口街迁来外双溪现址。 民国五十三年秋,安素堂〈礼拜堂及图书馆联合大楼〉及学生活动中心大厦 两翼房屋同时建筑竣工。 民国五十六年春,黄董事长奉派出国,董事会改推孙科博士为董事长。 民国五十七年夏,增设商学系及商用数学系。成立文、商两学院,恢复大学 名义。石超庸院长被推为首任校长,不久病逝,由桂崇基先生接任校长。 民国五十八年八月,桂校长因病辞职,董事会聘端木恺博士继任校长。同 年,成立数学系。十二月,奉准恢复完全大学建制,设文理、法、商三个学 院。 民国五十九年秋,增设物理、化学两系,并合并原隶文理学院之数学系,另 成立理学院;文理学院则恢复原文学院名称。同时设立经济学研究所暨夜间 部。商学系更名为企业管理学系。 民国六十年,设中国文化研习班,专为外籍学生讲授我国语言、文字及文化 课程,以促进国际友谊,传播中华文化。 民国六十年秋,设法律学研究所。并购置台北市延平南路书院段土地,兴建 城中校区第一大楼。 民国六十一年夏,奉准增设历史、音乐、电子计算机科学等三系,及外文系 东方语言组。 民国六十二年夏,增设会计学研究所、社会学系、及外文系德文组。 民国六十二年秋至六十三年春,理学院科学馆及男、女生宿舍各一幢,先后 兴建竣工并启用。 民国六十三年夏,增设中国文学研究所及国际贸易学系。 民国六十三年九月,为使音乐系有一适合音乐教学之独立环境及设备,特兴 建音乐馆一座,除各种专用教室外,并备有可容三百余人之音乐厅。又建单身 宿舍一幢,使单身外籍教师能长期安心在校教学。同月,董事长孙科博士病 故。 民国六十四年春,董事会改推杨亮功博士为董事长。 民国六十四年夏,文学院外国语文学系所辖英国语文、东方语文及德国语文 三组,均独立设系。法律系区分比较法学组及司法实务组,分别招生。 民国六十六年夏,中国文学研究所增设博士班,并招收首届研究生。 民国六十九年夏,增设日本文化研究所,及哲学系、微生物学系。原东方语 文学系改名为日本语文学系。 民国七十年夏,成立社会学研究所,分设社会理论及社会工作两组招生。多 年来次第完成之建筑,有扩建语言中心教室大楼、教师研究大楼、中正图书馆 及城区第二大楼等。 民国七十年八月,聘杨其铣先生为副校长。 民国七十一年三月,社会学系分设社会理论组及社会工作组。 民国七十二年八月一日,端木校长退休,副校长杨其铣先生继任校长。未 久,董事会改选,推举端木先生为董事长。 民国七十二、三年间,新购城区第二大楼旁两笔土地,共计四八四四平方公 尺,辟为运动场,城中校区规模益臻完善。 民国七十三年夏,成立外国语文学院,下辖英国语文、日本语文、德国语文 三学系,及日本文化研究所。 民国七十四年九月,新建城中校区平房教室十一间,作为学生社团活动之场 所。 民国七十五年,增购城中校区第三、四大楼两栋,用为教室,并供扩大推广 教育之需。同时全力充实电脑教学设备,及促进学校行政作业电脑化。 民国七十六年秋,端木董事长逝世。董事会改选,推举王绍□先生任董事长。 同年起,学生会推派代表参加校务会议。 民国七十七年夏,增设微生物学研究所及管理学研究所。 民国七十七年七月,首次主办大学院校夜间部联合招生,圆满完成,获各方 赞许。 民国七十八年夏,经济研究所博士班奉准成立招生。同年暑期,改中国文化 班为文化交流中心,积极开展国际学术机构文化交流事宜。 民国七十八年夏,增设心理学系。并以原社会学系之社会理论组、社会工作 组,分别独立设系为社会学系及社会工作学系。 民国七十九年夏,开始兴建综合大楼。建地二O、六九三平方公尺,楼高八 层,包括教室、大礼堂、会议厅、餐厅、体育馆、交谊厅、百货商店、书店、 银行、邮局、社团办公室等,规模宏伟。工程预定两年。 民国七十九年八月,聘教务长章孝慈先生为副校长,并兼任教务长。 民国八十年夏,新设政治学研究所。日本文化研究所增设博士班。 民国八十年七月,法律学研究所增设博士班。又为提升我国法律教育水准, 适应当前社会需要,培养精于法学而又兼具其他专业学能之高级法制人才,特 将硕士班区分甲、乙两组,乙组招收非主修法律学并具有相当工作经验之大学 毕业生,此举开我国法学教育之新纪元,广获各方瞩目与赞许。 民国八十年八月,杨其铣校长以健康欠佳请辞,董事会决议准休假半年,请 章孝慈副校长代理校务。 民国八十一年元月,本校所订八十至八十三年度之「四年中程校务发展计 划」经教育部评定奖助台币肆仟零壹拾万元,居全国二十所私立大学校院之 冠。 民国八十一年二月,杨校长辞职,董事会聘章副校长继任校长。并改聘杨前 校长为名誉校长。民国八十一年初,逐年公布本校「各项收入占总收入百分 比」及「经营支出资本支出占总支出百分比」两图表,俾全校教职员生了解学 校财务之运作状况。 民国八十一年五月,购买外双溪校区后山之国有财产局土地五笔,以便增建 校舍。 民国八十一年夏,增设数学研究所及社会工作研究所。 民国八十二年三月校庆日,同时举行新建「综合大楼」落成及启用典礼。大 陆地区东吴校友总会会长张梦白教授及与本校学术交流密切之日本拓殖大学理 事长藤渡辰信先生等远来观礼,并植树留念。 民国八十二年六月,设立音乐研究所。 民国八十二年八月,颁授名誉法学博士学位予毕生为南非种族平等奋斗、为 人民自由奔走之曼德拉先生。(注:曼德拉先生后当选为南总统) 民国八十二年八月起,教育部正式开放授权十二所大学校院可自行审查教师 升等作业,本校为唯一获得授权之私立大学。 民国八十二年八月,设立与教务、训导、总务三处平行之「发展处」,负责 公关、企划、募款及校友联络等业务,为国内大学之首创。 民国八十二年八月、九月,先后与大陆政法大学、苏州大学签订学术交流合 作协议书。 民国八十二年十一月,连接外双溪校区与城中校区之校园网路建构完成,本 校逐步朝行政业务自动化发展。 民国八十三年一月,重新整治操场及运动设施,并铺设合成橡胶跑道,为全 国大学之首创。同月,与北京大学签订学术交流合作协议书。 民国八十三年三月十三日配合校庆,举行女生第四宿舍动土典礼及图书馆非 书资料室启用剪彩。 民国八十三年夏,增设化学系硕士班。 民国八十三年元月五日新大学法颁布后,本校为积极配合实施,乃著手修订 本校组织规程,先由综合规划委员会四位委员起草,再由章校长召集修订小组 研议,最后提送校务会议讨论,于十月十五日通过,十月二十四日送董事会审 核通过,十一月三十日报教育部,八十四年三月十六日教育部核备通过。 民国八十三年十一月,章校长赴大陆北京开会,不幸脑溢血突发。 民国八十四年四月中旬,董事会决议章校长因病卸除校长职务,并聘蔡仲平 教务长为代理校长。 民国八十四年九月,夜间部中国文学系、英国语文学系、日本语文学系迁回 外双溪校区上课。 民国八十四年九月,外国语文学院日本语文学系及德国语文学系首次派学生 分别前往日本明海大学及德国明斯特大学研读。 民国八十五年春,章前校长孝慈溘然病逝于台北荣民总医院。 民国八十五年三月,专属校史室启用。 民国八十五年四月,依大学法之规定及校务会议、董事会通过之办法成立校 长遴选委员会,开始遴选校长之工作;六月遴选委员会遴选出两位人选,再经 董事会圈选出本校物理学系刘源俊教授为校长,并于七月报教育部核备,八月 一日交接上任。 民国八十五年六月一日,为充份发挥学校现有教育资源,协助学生拓展生涯 规划方向,并配合国家教育政策,培养中等学校师资,特于教务处下增设教育 学程小组。 民国八十五年秋,发展处推动「建校百年纪念金银套币」筹款计画,预计于 八十六年八月中旬正式推出。 民国八十五年十二月教育部重新核定本校夜间部八学系各有一班转型为正规 学制(参加大学联招「乙部」),另各有一班转型为推广进修制(参加进修学 士班联招)。 民国八十六年三月一日起行驶溪城学生专车,每日计有十二班次往返于外双 溪校区与城中校区之间。 民国八十六年三月与日本拓殖大学签订「东吴大学与拓大缔结姊妹校协议 书」、四月与高千穗商科大学签订「东吴大学与高千穗商科大学交流协议书 」。 民国八十六年四月一日刘校长造访苏州大学与钱培德校长续签学术交流协议 书,并达成两校于西元二千年共同庆祝建校百年之协议。 民国八十六年七月城区第五大楼定案,预计八十六学年开工,八十八年九月 完成,作为教室、体育设施、活动中心及停车场等多用途。 民国八十六年八月,原外语学院德国语文学系更名为「德国文化学系」;另 增设国际贸易学系硕士班并正式招生。 民国八十六年八月十五日,为加强与国立故宫博物院之学术交流与合作,增 进人文艺术与科技之学术发展,特订定学术合作协议书,开启双方正式合作之 管道。 Source: http://www.scu.edu.tw/intro/scuhist.htm
