Soochow University is a comprehensive university located in the famous garden city of Suzhou (Soochow), Jiangsu, China.The history of Soochow University goes back to later Qing Dynasty when Soochow University was first established in 1900. As one of the oldest Christian universities in China, Soochow University conferred China's first Master Degree of Chemistry in 1917.
By incorporation of private Soochow University, private Jiangnan University and Sunan Cultural and Educational College, Sunan Teachers' College was established in August, 1952. With approval from Education Ministry of Central Government, it was formally named as Jiangsu Teachers' College in December,1952.
In 1982, Jiangsu Teachers' College was expanded with incorporation of Suzhou School of Finance and Economy. Upon approval from State Council, its name was switched to Suzhou University, under the jurisdiction of the Education Commission, Jiangsu Province.
Currently, Suzhou University has more than 24,000 students, including over 15,000 undergraduates, more than 500 postgraduates and about 8,500 adult education students. It has 3,200 faculty and staff members, including more than 700 professors and associate professors.
Suzhou University provides various programs leading to Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees. It is one of the 100 key construction universities of China listed in the "211 Project" and the current president is Professor Peide Qian.
